Vascular ultrasound is a non-invasive procedure used by healthcare professionals to assess blood flow in the arteries and veins of the arms, neck, and legs. This test helps in diagnosing conditions such as blood clots and peripheral artery disease. It may also be performed to evaluate your suitability for angioplasty or to monitor blood vessel health following a bypass procedure.
Vascular ultrasound, also known as a duplex study, is a non-invasive diagnostic tool that provides insights into blood flow within the arms, neck, and legs. High-frequency sound waves are employed to create detailed images of soft tissues and blood vessels.
Healthcare providers may use vascular ultrasound to examine blood flow through veins and arteries. It is commonly used to assist in diagnosing conditions such as:
You may be referred for a vascular ultrasound if you experience symptoms such as:
Healthcare providers also utilise vascular ultrasound to evaluate blood flow to organs and may perform the test after an organ transplant. Additionally, it can help determine if you're a suitable candidate for angioplasty or to assess blood vessel health after venous bypass surgery.
A trained ultrasound Sonographer conducts your vascular ultrasound exam, having specialised knowledge in performing these tests.
Vascular ultrasound employs high-frequency sound waves to generate detailed images. These sound waves penetrate soft tissues and blood vessels, producing echoes that are transformed into images or videos by a computer.
There are no special preparations required for a vascular ultrasound. Aim to arrive at the facility approximately 15 minutes before your appointment. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and leave any jewellery or valuables at home; you may be asked to change into a hospital gown.
You will lie on an examination table, and the Sonographer will apply a lubricating gel to your skin where your arteries and veins will be examined. They will then place a special probe called a transducer against your skin. You may feel slight pressure as the probe is moved over the area, and you might hear the sound of your blood flow, which will have a pulsing or whooshing quality.
Once the exam is complete, the Sonographer will clean off the lubricating gel. You can resume work or other activities immediately following the exam.
Vascular ultrasound is a safe procedure with no side effects expected from the exam.
This is the perfect time to work, with a strong demand for skilled professionals. By choosing MedicsPro, you'll have access to a wide range of opportunities and competitive pay rates.
