What is a Gynaecological Ultrasound?

A gynaecological ultrasound is commonly used to assess conditions affecting the female pelvic organs, including the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries.

How Will I Know if I Need a Gynaecological Ultrasound?

Your healthcare provider will refer you for a gynaecological ultrasound if it is necessary. This type of ultrasound is often utilised to evaluate conditions impacting the organs in a woman’s pelvis. Additionally, some of our hospitals provide Hysterosalpingogram Contrast Sonography (HyCoSy) and alternative ovarian screening methods.

How Should I Prepare for a Gynaecological Ultrasound?

If you are having your pelvis scanned, you should arrive at the appointment with a full bladder. This helps provide a clearer view of the pelvic organs. A restroom will be available for you to empty your bladder right after the scan. Please make sure to carefully review any preparation instructions provided before your appointment.

What Happens During an Ultrasound?

A gynaecologist will operate the ultrasound machine, which can perform either of two types of scans based on the area being examined:

  • External: A cool gel is applied to the skin over the area to be scanned, and a probe is moved back and forth. You may be asked to take deep breaths or change positions to capture different images.
  • Internal: For examining potential abnormalities such as polyps, cysts, or fibroids, as well as assessing the ovaries or uterus, a small probe is inserted into the vagina.

The sound waves reflect off the internal organs and return through the probe to a computer, which converts these waves into detailed real-time images displayed on a monitor.

An ultrasound is generally painless; however, some slight discomfort may occur depending on the type of scan. A consultant radiologist will perform the procedure, assisted by a healthcare assistant who will be present to support you.
