What is a Podiatrist?

Podiatrists are highly trained healthcare professionals specializing in the health of the feet and lower limbs. They work in various areas including sports medicine, diabetes management, injection therapy, exercise regimes, and casting techniques. Their primary goal is to relieve pain, treat infections, maintain mobility, and prevent or correct deformities.

Podiatrists can develop specialized skills in areas such as diabetic foot care, where they monitor for potential ulcers and nerve damage, or in managing degenerative foot changes due to arthritis. They may address issues like fungal nail infections, skin infections, bunions, hammer toes, foot pain, warts, or verrucae.

Podiatry Qualifications

To become a podiatrist, one must complete a university degree in podiatry and be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) to practice in the UK. Podiatrists work with patients of all ages, though they often see elderly patients due to the prevalence of degenerative changes and diabetes in older populations. Compassion and a holistic approach to patient care are essential qualities for a podiatrist, as small adjustments can significantly enhance a patient's quality of life.

Podiatry Job Salary Range

Podiatrists generally start at Band 5 on the NHS Agenda for Change scale, with salaries ranging from £25,000 to £30,000 per year. Specialist podiatrists and advanced roles can earn up to £46,000 annually. Due to high demand and long waiting lists, locum podiatrists are often needed, with roles offering higher hourly rates—typically between £19 and £30 per hour, and more for specialists.

What Does a Locum Podiatrist Do?

Locum podiatrists perform many of the same duties as permanent staff, seeing patients in various settings such as hospitals, health centers, residential homes, and clinics. They must quickly adapt to new environments and build rapport with staff and patients. Many locum podiatrists appreciate the flexibility of choosing shifts and the dynamic nature of working in different settings.
