Our available sonography positions cover a range of specialties, including 3D and 4D scanning, musculoskeletal, gynaecological, obstetric, and vascular scanning.

What is a Sonographer?

Sonographers are skilled professionals who use ultrasound waves to create images of the inside of the body. Unlike other imaging techniques, ultrasound provides real-time video-like images, which are often more informative than still images. Sonographers perform the scans, generate images, interpret their observations, and then write reports for the referring clinician.

While ultrasound imaging is commonly associated with monitoring fetal development, it also has many other applications, such as assessing blood vessel patency, examining organ structure, and evaluating muscle or tendon damage. Ultrasound is considered a safe procedure since it does not rely on radiation.

Given that patients may feel anxious or concerned about the procedure or its results, sonographers must be sensitive and understanding to help ease their worries. A thorough knowledge of anatomy and attention to detail are essential for accurate reporting.

Sonography Qualifications

Many sonographers hold a degree in Diagnostic Radiography, but it is also possible to enter the field from another relevant healthcare or science degree by completing a postgraduate certificate in ultrasound. Sonographers must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). The role can be fast-paced and high-pressure, with common specializations including paediatrics, oncology, and renal.

Sonography Job Salary Range

Sonographers typically fall within Bands 5 to 7 of the NHS Agenda for Change pay scale. A newly qualified sonographer may earn around £35,000, with potential earnings exceeding £45,000 for those with experience and additional responsibilities. Locum sonographers often earn higher hourly rates than their permanently employed counterparts, with rates ranging from £40 to £55 per hour. Additional earnings are possible for working unsocial hours, such as nights and weekends, which are often required in both NHS and private settings.

What Does a Locum Sonographer Do?

A Locum sonographer performs many of the same tasks as a permanent team member, including providing ultrasound services to inpatients and outpatients, sometimes in emergency situations. Locums may work in general or specialized roles depending on the hospital or clinic. Unlike permanent staff, locums need to quickly integrate into new teams and adapt to various processes and policies. However, locum work offers flexibility, often higher hourly rates, and a broader range of experience.
