We Offer:
The Theatre Admissions Day Surgery Unit (TADSU) manages pre- and post-operative care for all day surgeries, ensuring safe same-day discharge as per the surgeon's advice. It also provides pre-operative care for major surgeries as required.
When preparing for your hospital visit, consider bringing items to keep yourself entertained, such as your phone, iPad, books, or magazines. It's recommended to bring a small, cabin-sized overnight bag. If you need to stay longer, family can bring a larger bag later. Avoid bringing food, alcohol, cash, jewellery, or other valuables.
Bring any mobility aids you might need, a minimum supply of your current medication, and essential items like glasses, contact lenses, or hearing aids.
Before attending the Theatre Admissions Day Unit, please notify family and friends of your plans. Ensure someone is available to collect you after your procedure and make arrangements for any support you may need at home.
Be prepared for potential wait times, as the duration of each procedure can vary. Bringing entertainment will help pass the time. Once checked in by reception, a nurse will escort you to the unit, where cubicles are available for completing the admission process and meeting the surgical team. You will then wait in the designated male/female waiting area on a recliner chair.
The nurse will measure your vital signs and complete a pre-operative checklist. You’ll need to wear a hospital gown and, in some cases, anti-embolism stockings. The team performing the operation will then meet you and address any questions.
You may either walk or be transported on a trolley into the theatre. Inside, you'll see bright lights, various medical equipment, and staff dressed in blue or raspberry-coloured scrubs. This is the team who will support you throughout your procedure, following a World Health Organisation (WHO) checklist to ensure your safety.
After the procedure, you will be taken to the recovery area, where you will receive one-on-one nursing care. The nurse or anaesthetist will manage your pain and treat any nausea, ensuring a smooth recovery.
Once awake, you’ll return to the ward, where nurses will monitor your progress and continue your care. Light refreshments will be offered as they prepare your pain relief and other medications for discharge.
You will only be discharged once you are fully awake, your pain and nausea are under control, and you are able to tolerate food and drink. It’s recommended to ensure you can pass urine before leaving, which may take a few hours.
Most patients are discharged on the same day as their surgery. Please arrange your own transportation to return home and notify the unit in advance if you need assistance.
