A Surgical Care Practitioner (SCP) is a non-medical healthcare professional who plays a vital role in surgical teams within operating theatres, clinics, and wards. They provide essential support to surgeons and other healthcare professionals before, during, and after surgical procedures. SCPs are trained to perform certain surgical interventions and provide pre- and post-operative care under the supervision of a senior surgeon.

SCPs complete an accredited training program that extends their scope of practice. This program includes a mix of theoretical and practical training, withspecialization in a chosen surgical sub-specialty during the second year.

With further training and experience, SCPs can apply for positions in specialist surgical teams, clinical management, or roles in education and research. After completing their training, SCPs are expected to maintain and expand their knowledge and skills, and they can join a managed voluntary register to demonstrate their qualifications in line with the standards set by the Royal College of Surgeons.
SCPs typically work around 37.5 hours a week, with flexible scheduling that may include evenings, nights, and weekends. During training, they are compensated at Band 6 of NHS terms and conditions, with a potential increase to Band 7 upon qualification.
