As a radiography assistant or imaging support worker, you’ll collaborate with both diagnostic radiographers, who use imaging to diagnose illnesses, and therapeutic radiographers, who treat conditions such as cancer with x-rays and other ionising radiation.

Radiography assistants and imaging support workers interact with a range of healthcare professionals, including diagnostic and therapeutic radiographers, medical physicists, engineers, doctors, nurses, and other health staff. This collaborative approach is essential for providing high-quality patient care across various hospital departments.
Most radiography assistants and imaging support workers are employed in NHS hospitals, where they provide services across multiple departments such as Accident & Emergency (A&E), outpatient clinics, operating theatres, and hospital wards. Some may also work in private healthcare settings, supporting similar functions.
There are no formal entry requirements for becoming a radiography assistant or imaging support worker, but employers typically look for candidates with strong numeracy, literacy, and IT skills. GCSEs or equivalent qualifications may be preferred, along with healthcare-related qualifications like BTEC or NVQ.
Relevant work experience—whether paid or voluntary—in health or social care is a valuable advantage. Applicants for NHS roles will need to demonstrate how they embody NHS values in their work.
