Psychological therapies are among the various treatment and support options available through Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS).
CAMHS stands for Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services, which is the NHS's mental health service for children and young people. CAMHS provides support for a wide range of mental health issues, including depression, eating disorders, self-harm, abuse, anger management, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, anxiety, and other difficulties.
Local NHS CAMHS services are available throughout the UK, consisting of teams made up of nurses, therapists, psychologists, child and adolescent psychiatrists (medical doctors specialising in mental health), support workers, social workers, and other professionals. You may also come across the term CYPMHS (Children and Young People’s Mental Health Services), which encompasses all available services, including CAMHS.
This multidisciplinary team consists of mental health professionals who provide both short-term and long-term treatments. The team includes family therapists, psychotherapists, clinical psychologists, child and adolescent psychiatrists, counsellors, and educational psychotherapists.
Interventions may involve techniques such as Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR). These therapies can be delivered individually or in combination, tailored to meet the specific needs of the child and their family.
To access CAMHS, the first step is typically obtaining a referral for a CAMHS assessment. Referrals can come from parents, teachers, GPs, or even from the young person themselves if they are old enough (this may depend on local policies). Social care workers or youth offending teams may also refer individuals for assessment. It’s essential to provide as much information as possible during the referral to facilitate appropriate support.
Most local CAMHS teams have websites that provide information on how to access their services, and you can find your local CAMHS team using your postcode.
Once referred, you’ll be placed on a waiting list for an assessment. This is typically an informal discussion where the CAMHS team gets to know you and understands how they can help. You will usually meet with one or two team members, and if you are under 16, your parents or carers will likely be invited to join part of the meeting.
Assessments generally take place at a CAMHS clinic but may also occur at your school or home. During the assessment, the team will ask questions to better understand your
struggles and determine the best support for you.
Common questions may include:
Thinking about your answers beforehand can help you express yourself more clearly during the appointment. At the end of the assessment, the team will discuss the next steps and the support you might need, and you can ask any questions you may have.
CAMHS offers a range of flexible support tailored to individual needs, including:
If you or your parents/carers are not confident in speaking English, CAMHS can provide interpreters. Additionally, there is a service specifically for Deaf young people, known as Deaf CAMHS, where specialists use British Sign Language (BSL). This service is accessible for Deaf or hearing-impaired individuals.
CAMHS is a free service provided by the NHS, supporting children and young people up to the age of 18 who are facing mental health challenges. They address a variety of mental health issues, including difficult feelings, behavioural problems, relationship issues, sadness, anger, stress, worry, psychosis, depression, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
Through a collaborative approach, CAMHS aims to ensure that young people receive comprehensive care that meets their emotional, behavioural, and mental health needs.
