An Overview of Radiography

At MedicsPro, we are dedicated to matching qualified radiographers with locum positions across a variety of countries and healthcare settings. Operating primarily from Central London, we take pride in our global reach and our ability to connect medical professionals with contract opportunities around the world, advancing their radiography careers.

We offer a range of locum diagnostic and therapeutic radiographer positions, including roles within specialties such as radiotherapy and ultrasound.

Primary Specialties

A career in radiography encompasses a wide range of specializations. The profession is divided into two primary areas:

Diagnostic Radiography

Diagnostic radiographers capture and analyse anatomical images to aid in the diagnostic process. They screen for abnormalities and collaborate closely with surgeons to inform patient treatment plans. Opportunities in diagnostic radiography are available in various hospital settings, including A&E, wards, and operating theatres. Specialties include C-Ray, PET CT Scanning, Angiography, and Mammography. Diagnostic radiographers must empathize with patients who may find the diagnostic process unsettling.

Therapeutic Radiography

Therapeutic radiographers work with the Oncology Department to administer radioactive therapy and treatment. This role involves providing patient care from initial diagnosis through to post-treatment follow-up. Therapeutic radiographers must offer compassionate care to patients dealing with serious, life-threatening conditions.

Radiography Disciplines

Within radiography, there are several disciplines. MedicsPro covers a broad range of roles, including:

  • Applications specialists work with advanced imaging equipment, ensuring practitioners have access to the latest technology. This demanding role often involves significant travel.
  • Cardiac radiographers specialize in imaging the heart. They perform procedures such as angiograms and CT scans to diagnose and treat heart conditions. This imaging is crucial for managing patients with conditions like heart attacks.
  • CT radiographers use computerized tomography to produce detailed images of internal body structures. CT scans help identify injuries or illnesses that may not be visible with plain x-rays and assist in planning and monitoring treatments like radiotherapy.
  • Radiographers use advanced imaging technology to create detailed pictures of internal organs and structures. They interpret these images to diagnose diseases, conditions, or injuries and work across various specialties, including emergency departments and specialist areas like neurology.
  • Mammography involves using low-energy X-rays to screen for and diagnose breast cancer. Radiographers in this field are highly trained to use this equipment to detect conditions or abnormalities.
  • MRI radiographers perform scans when other imaging methods are insufficient. The MRI procedure, which involves lying in a narrow tunnel, can be challenging for some patients, particularly those with claustrophobia.
  • Nuclear medicine uses small amounts of radioactive materials to assess body function and identify or treat diseases. Radiographers track the path of these 'radio-tracers' to evaluate patient health.
  • Radiography assistants support diagnostic and therapeutic radiographers by handling film processing, inventory management, and assisting with medical procedures like biopsies.
  • Reporting radiographers perform scans and analyze the resulting images, creating reports that summarize key findings. They commonly report on x-rays of the chest and musculoskeletal system.
