We Offer:
The Mould Room is where we produce specialised masks for patients undergoing radiotherapy, particularly for the head, neck, chest, and limbs. These masks are vital for keeping patients still and ensuring the correct position during treatment—this process is called immobilisation. The Mould Room is part of our comprehensive radiotherapy pre-treatment planning service.
While the term Mould Room originates from an older process where masks were made using plaster of Paris to mold a patient’s face, today, we use more advanced materials and techniques. If you are receiving radiotherapy to areas such as your head, face, or neck, we will create a custom mask for you to wear during treatment to help keep you in the correct position.
Each mask is individually crafted to ensure a comfortable and secure fit. If you have thick or long facial hair, it may help to trim or thin it beforehand.
The mask starts as a flat plastic sheet attached to a frame. It is softened in warm water until flexible and then gently molded over your face and neck. The material feels like a warm, wet flannel but is completely painless. The mask sets within five minutes and can be used immediately. It has small perforations, so you can breathe comfortably throughout the process.
As part of the preparation, you will have a CT scan while wearing the mask. This helps the medical team plan your treatment accurately. In some cases, you may need an injection of contrast dye to better highlight the treatment area.
In addition to masks, the Mould Room provides clinical and technical services for creating Beam Direction Shells (BDS), which help immobilise and precisely target radiation therapy for other parts of the body, such as the chest and limbs.
