Our opportunities include both permanent and locum positions, with responsibilities ranging from assisting in post-mortem examinations to managing body preparation and liaising with families and authorities.
A mortuary technician, also known as an anatomical pathology technician (APT), assists pathologists in performing post-mortems and managing the deceased. They handle various tasks including moving bodies, preparing surgical instruments, documenting findings, weighing organs, taking tissue samples, and restoring bodies for funeral arrangements. Mortuary technicians may also be involved in cases related to police investigations.
To work as a mortuary technician, a Level 3 diploma from the Royal Society of Public Health is required. This course must be completed while employed in a training position within an NHS or public mortuary. Due to the specialized nature of this role and low staff turnover, permanent positions are rare, making locum roles an ideal option for those entering the field.
Starting salaries for mortuary technicians are around £15,000 per year, with potential for advancement through approved training programs. Locum mortuary technicians can earn between £19-33 per hour, depending on location and experience. Positions requiring unsocial hours, such as evenings or weekends, may offer higher rates, up to 1.5 times the standard rate. Emergency situations, such as natural disasters or criminal events, may also require additional hours.
Locum mortuary technicians perform similar tasks to permanent staff, including the care of the deceased, liaising with bereaved families, and managing administrative duties. They must quickly integrate into new teams and establish rapport with pathologists and other staff. Unlike permanent staff, locums can choose their shifts to fit personal schedules.
