Duties:
You don't need to do anything (other than smile & be friendly) unless requested. But it's nice every hour our two to wander by the chemo pods and smile at and/or say hello to patients.
Especially if you're sat in the (relatively distant) Consultant Rooms, you should regularly pop by the chemo hub in case the nurses need you, or at least so they know you're still around. Most of the time you'll be sat in your office, doing your own thing.
Occasionally, a nurse or pharmacist might ask you to
(i) Prescribe something;
(ii) Help take bloods or insert a cannula;
(iii) Review a patient, either for chemo-specific problems (nausea, rash, constipation) or
general GP type stuff (UTI, URTI).
Note that for administering chemo, the canulas must be inserted distal to the ACF.
They have a "pochie" system on-site which will give you immediate FBC results (neutropaenia, anaemia)
You'll write brief notes on paper (!) letterhead, which they'll then scan into their Mosaiq system
In all but the most trivial cases (reassurance, paracetamol, anti-emetics, laxatives), it's worth sending the Consultant a message (even if you just write "this is what I found, I think it's X, I'll do Y unless you disagree" and give them 20min to object before letting a patient leave). This is because it's private, and also to cover yourself.
You are Lead in case of arrest. Remember: not a hospital, so beyond O2, IVF, ECG, Antibiotics (and initial shock/adrenaline/whatever), all sick/unstable patients get blue-lighted to the local hospital
Neutropenic sepsis: generally Tazocin & IVF, both for oncology and haematology patients. It happens very rarely (less than once per year), but you should know what to do in the event of a serious chemo allergic/anaphylactic reactions.
